Overview:

What is Velositol? Velositol is a patented ingredient developed by Nutrition21 that's designed to increase strength and power by enhancing muscle protein synthesis (MPS) when combined with protein powder. The benefits of Velositol include enhanced muscle growth, lean body mass, and faster recovery.

But how exactly does Velositol do this? Let's take a deeper look.

First off, Velositol is a patented combination of amylopectin and chromium. Velositol's ability to increase MPS is attributed to enhanced insulin functioning through several factors:

1. Amylopectin is highly soluble and stimulate's a controlled insulin release
2. Chromium enhances insulin functioning/sensitivity

Together, these nutrients enhance insulin's ability to carry amino acids into muscle cells and thus, aid in muscle growth.

The benefits of Velositol were initially put to the test in a 2017 study which compared the effects of 2g of Velositol with 6g of whey protein vs whey protein alone. Results from this study were certainly promising; the Velositol group showed double the muscle protein synthesis response when compared to whey protein alone (48% vs. 24%). 

A follow up study conducted on 35 men in a randomized, active-controlled, double-blind design assigned participants to one of three groups:

1. Comparator Group: 15g whey protein
2. High-Dose Comparator Group: 30g whey protein
3. Active Group: 15g whey protein plus 2g Velositol

Results showed that ingesting 15g whey protein with 2g Velositol significantly increased squat repetitions to failure, vertical power, and vertical jump. However, it did not provide significant improvements in body composition. Results from these two studies are found below ⬇️

*It's important to note that the benefits of Velositol are not restricted to only whey protein powder. Velositol has also been shown to be effective in increasing MPS in plant-based proteins and BCAA's as well.
