Cinnamon Bark Extract
Cinnamon Bark Extract is primarily used in sports nutrition by acting as a GDA and improves insulin response by transporting glucose to muscle tissue.
Overview
What is Cinnamon Bark Extract? Cinnamon Bark Extract is a common glucose disposal agent and rich in many bioactive constituents including catechins, epicatechins, cinnamaldehyde, and cinnamic acid. The benefits of Cinnamon Bark Extract include improvements in blood sugar, tryglycerides, cholesterol, and HbA1C levels.
But how exactly does Cinnamon Bark Extract work? Let's take a deeper look ⬇️
Glucose Disposal Agent
Cinnamon Bark Extract is known as a GDA, or Glucose Disposal Agent, which helps to transport glucose out of the bloodstream and into muscles to be utilized for energy. In order to understand Cinnamon Bark Extract, it's first important to understand the role insulin plays in maintaining blood sugar levels. Insulin is a hormone that essentially acts as a motor for the transport of nutrients within blood. When glucose is introduced into the bloodstream, the pancreas secretes insulin to move the sugar into cells, which will lower blood sugar levels.
Multiple studies show that Cinnamon Bark Extract decreases fasting blood glucose levels by increasing glucose absorption. It's ability to do so is attributed to its methylhydroxychalcone content, which poses insulin-mimicking properties.
The benefits of Cinnamon Bark Extract were tested during a 16-week long, double-blind randomized controlled trial conducted on 116 individuals with metabolic syndrome. Participants either took 3g Cinnamon Bark Extract or placebo (wheat flour capsules). Blood pressure, body composition, and metabolic parameters were assessed. Results suggest Cinnamon Bark Extract improved fasting blood glucose, HbA1C, waist circumference, and body mass index. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome was significantly reduced in the intervention group versus the control group.
Cinnamon also poses antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and anti-diabetic properties.
