Capsimax
Capsimax is primarily used in sports nutrition to used to promote healthy weight levels.
Overview
What is Capsimax? Capsimax is a concentrated extract derived from red chili peppers that's touted to aid in weight loss through several mechanisms. The benefits of Capsimax are attributed to its rich capsaicinoid content; capsaicinoids are responsible for heat sensation experienced when one eats a spicy food.
While animal studies clearly demonstrate weight loss benefits when consuming capsaicinoids, human research is not as convincing. But nontheless, studies show that Capsimax does pose a few benefits when it comes to weigh management.
In a clinical trial composed of 77 young men, results showed that overweight individuals who took either 2mg or 4mg Capsimax over the course of 12 weeks self-reported a decrease in energy intake by 257kcal/day and resulted in a more favorable waist to hip ratio at the conclusion of the study. This finding suggests Capsimax may play a role in suppressing appetite, which could lead to weight loss.
In a meta-analysis of nine clinical studies, capsaicin supplementation was found to increase total daily energy expenditure by around 70kcal per day in men with a BMI greater than 25 kg/m2, but not in those whose BMI was less than 25 kg/m2. Furthermore, another meta-analysis conducted between 1990 and 2019 concluded that capsaicin supplementation may modestly increase resting metabolic rate and energy expenditure due to a rise in fat oxidation. However, these changes were very mild.
In a Chinese study composed of over 500,000 volunteers, results showed that those who consumed more spicy meals on a regular basis had lower rates of cancer and heart disease. It's suggested this may be due to the fact that capsaicin may improve glycemic control; however, a meta-analysis of 14 controlled clincial trials found that capsaicin did not effect blood glucose or insulin levels in any way. More research is needed to discover the mechanism as to how capsaicin is suggested to reduce risk of cancer and heart disease.
Capsimax is a bit different than traditional capsaicin supplements, as it is produced with Omnibead technology; a controlled release of the encapsulating technology that delivers capsaicin to the stomach and prevents GI distress.
In conclusion, the effects of capsaicin on suppressing appetite are modest at best, and the research shows little to any benefit when supplemented over a long period of time.
