What is Berberine? Berberine is known as a Glucose Disposal Agent (GDA) derived from barks, leaves, twigs, rhizomes, roots, barberry, Oregon grape, and turmeric. The benefits of berberine are well documented, as it's been shown to aid in the transport of glucose out of the bloodstream and into muscles to be utilized for energy.

In order to understand Berberine, it's first important to understand the role insulin plays in maintaining blood sugar levels. Insulin is a hormone that essentially acts as a motor for the transport of nutrients within blood. When glucose is introduced into the bloodstream, the pancreas secretes insulin to move the sugar into cells, which will lower blood sugar levels.

Insulin powers the bodies primary glucose transporter, GLUT4. GLUT4 moves and stores glucose into either 1) fat cells or 2) muscle cells. Where glucose ends up plays an essential role in body composition. If glucose is stored in fat tissue, it will build new fat tissue. On the other hand, if glucose is stored in muscle tissue, it will be prioritized to burn as fuel.

While berberine is a great supplement, we'd recommend checking out dihydroberberine as its much more bioavailable and lasts twice as long as generic berberine!
