What is Bacopa Monnieri? Bacopa Monnieri is a highly popular nootropic herb that has been used for centuries to improve cognition and memory. The supposed benefits of Bacopa Monnieri include improvements in overall brain health, mood, anxiety and cognition; however, most studies have conflicting results. 

A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials conducted in 2014 reported that Bacopa Monnieri supplementation potentiall lead to improvements in cognition, most notably speed of attention. However, unlike the previous studies, a conflicting meta-anaylsis of randomized controlled trials conducted in 2021 resulted with no significant difference in nootropic outcomes with those who supplemented with Bacopa.

The mechanism as to how Bacopa Monnieri works is still unknown. It is believed to interact with neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and choline. Bacopa also may increase the growth of dendrites and promote communication between neurons. There is some evidence to suggest Bacopa may pose antidepressant and anxiety-relieving benefits, but again, the evidence is inconclusive.

Bacopa does pose antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which poses benefits to overall health.
