What is 5-HTP? 5-HTP is a metabolite of L-tryptophan and precursor to serotonin, the "happiness neurotransmitter." The benefits of 5-HTP are plentiful, as supplementation with 5-HTP has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms of depression. Other studies suggest that 5-HTP proves to be beneficial as a sleep aid and appetite suppressant, which could lead to weight loss.

One study comparing 5-HTP to the popular anti-depressant fluvoxamine found that 5-HTP provided anti-depressant effects to the same extent as fluvoxamine. While this claim would benefit from further studies, the initial findings are reassuring.

5-HTP typically is used as a sleep agent. One study reported that a combination of 5-HTP and GABA noted an increase in overall sleep duration and quality; at the same time, participants also reported a decrease in the time to fall asleep.

It has been proposed that 5-HTP may aid in weight loss for a few reasons. Several studies concluded that 5-HTP does indeed increase feelings of satiety, or the feeling of fullness. This mechanism would theoretically prevent individuals from over consuming food; in fact, one study reported that 5-HTP supplementation increased satiety and reduced binge eating tendencies in overweight participants.
